Trade Union Rights
We the undersigned petition the council to We the undersigned believe that the proposals contained in the government’s recent Trade Union Bill
• are incompatible with the British traditions of valuing liberty and freedom of association
• will not encourage productivity, nor promote good industrial relations.
Whereas trade unions make a positive contribution to national and industrial life by
• advising, supporting, educating and representing employees, promoting a healthy and safe workplace
• addressing problems through negotiations with employers, helping businesses to thrive and contribute to the national economy
Industrial action is a tiny proportion of trade union activity, usually a result of failed negotiations, and always a last resort
Therefore, we urge the leaderships of Northampton Borough and County Councils to mitigate the effects of this unnecessary law, to provide stability and confidence to staff and protect levels of service, by pledging to work in partnership with trade union representatives, and b
The proposed trade union bill is an unecessary, unfair and
unwanted set of measures that seek to address a problem that does
not exist and goes against the British principles of freedom and
fairness.
As a local organisation we feel it is imperative and incumbent
on our Council to uphold those values and they can do so by
mitigating these proposals contained in the Trade Union Bill by
respecting those employed by the council, by recognising the
valuable role that their elected trade union representatives play
in the efficient running of the organisation.
We call on the council to continue to work in partnership with
those representatives and protect their facility time, in order
that they may continue to perform the valuable work that they do in
ensuring the voices of those they represent are heard effectively,
and in turn contribute to the successful running of the
organisation, which also in turn benefits the general public.
